Review and Vouchers Giveaway: The King Louis Grill and Bar, Vivocity

King Louis Vivo
Game of Thrones
fans, eat your hearts out.

It is always fun to visit a themed restaurant. The King Louis is decorated like a medieval castle, gray walls, knight armors, stuffed tigers, wooden tables and benches, complete with a courtier in the form of an accomplished resident singer with a guitar, Joe, serenading diners with soft alternative music from John Mayer, The Cures, etc.

The King Louis Singapore
The owner designed this restaurant so that his children could have a fantasy world to play in. Little wonder it is named Best Family Restaurant in 2011 and 2012 by Parents World magazine. But I think it is perhaps more suitable for after work crowd or large groups of friends simply because the place has a Hard Rock Cafe feel to it.

king louis grill & bar - Teriyaki Chicken Salad
For starters, the mushroom soup ($8.90) was a crowd pleaser with bits of mushrooms that gave texture to the creamy soup. The teriyaki chicken salad ($13.80, above), another crowd pleaser, was very Asian, more sweet than salty. We also had Platter C ($21.90, below), consisting chicken wings, calamari, prawn twisters, wedges and banana wrapped in bacon. Not everything on this platter was great. But if you must have something to munch before the main, get the banana wrapped with bacon as an a la carte, unique, sweet with varying textures, or prawn twisters, a long thin conical prawn in crispy deep fried dough skin.

But my advice is to skip the starters because the mains are humongous. The restaurant is famous for their banquets, which are mountains of meat piled on a silver platter, served to you like a king. Size matters and this is extreme food porn, so much visual pleasure that we wow-ed and ooh-ed like suaku. There are 7 types of banquets that feed 2-5 people (see King Louis menu). Basically, the King’s Banquet (need to call a few days in advance to book) is all seafood. The queen’s banquets and the knight’s banquets have a choice of meat or seafood or a mix of both.

The King Louis Restaurant - Queen Victoria
We had the Queen Victoria’s Banquet ($108.50 for 2-3 pax, $166.50 for 4-5 pax), a mix of meat and seafood: Steaks, ribs, snapper with wasabi mayo, king prawns with cheese and scallop with garlic and wine sauce on a thick bed of roasted potatoes and vegetables.  In general, the meats were superior to the seafood. The prawns and fish weren’t fresh. But the steak was nicely done medium rare. The star was the baby back ribs, succulent meat that fell of the bone. In light that the meats were better, I’d recommend getting the all-meat banquets, such as Queen Isabelle’s Banquet ($79.90 for 2-3 pax, $129.50 for 4-5 pax) or  Knight Gawain’s Banquet ($53.90 for 2-3 pax, $89.50 for 4-5 pax).

The King Louis - Hazelnut Dacquoise
The kink in the meal came from the limited dessert choices on the menu. The hazelnut dacquoise ($7.90) had tough crust and not very satisfying chocolate. But otherwise, this is a fun place to feast like a king.
