Nasi lemak<\/em>, or <em>cai fan<\/em> on steroids,\u00a0should be one of our national dishes: everyone loves it, it unites us all. Rice is cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves, giving it robustness and an irresistible fragrance. Sides may include fried <em>ikan kuning<\/em>\u00a0fish, egg, cucumber, <em>ikan bilis<\/em>, sambal, fried chicken wings, and otah.<\/p>\n<p>We excluded restaurants such as <a href=\"http:\/\/rubbisheatrubbishgrow.com\/zh\/2014\/05\/02\/ujong-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ujong<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/rubbisheatrubbishgrow.com\/zh\/2013\/05\/23\/madam-kwan-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\">Madam Kwan<\/a>, because it&#8217;s unfair to compare apples with\u00a0oranges. We shortlisted 25 famous hawker and\u00a0<em>kopitiam<\/em> stalls, but when we visited <strong>Yi Li Xiang Nasi Lemak<\/strong> (Hougang) and <strong>Sheikh Najib Nasi Lemak\u00a0<\/strong>(Dunlop St), they were closed for good; and <strong>Famous Nasi Lemak<\/strong> (Redhill) is rebranded as Famous Delights, selling Chinese breakfast food now. We ate at\u00a022 stalls till we wanna puke. We don&#8217;t want to eat <em>nasi lemak <\/em>for at least the next 2 hours.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0ranked them based on rice, sambal, and sides.
