\"dorsettOut of the many, many things I like about Dorsett Hotel, the modern, pop-art design comes in tops because the design is (1) classy and playful, and (2) functional. Design MUST be functional and very small things matter like light switches at the side of the bed so you don’t have to climb out of bed to off the lights; the sink island extended to the toilet-bowl, because, come on, we all use our mobile phones on the bowls and we need a place to put our phones down when we finish our business; electrical multi-national sockets on both sides of the bed because we need to charge our phones; etc etc. These tiny details matter.
\n<\/p>\n

\"dorsettLobby: the chandelier motif is repeated throughout the hotel, making it playful and opulent.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"dorsettLet’s take a selfie: the door bell to each room is a fake camera. When you click the shutter button\/bell, the flash lights up.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"dorsettWe got the Splash Room that has a bathtub, standing shower, and a rainshower. (Most rooms don’t have a bathtub.)<\/p>\n

\"dorsettIf you’re shy or travelling with friends, don’t worry. There is a screen to separate the bathroom and bedroom. What is great about the open-concept is that you can take a bath and watch TV at the same time. (Another thoughtful detail: the highest volume for TV is set to 35, so guests won’t be disturbed, but you can still hear in the bathroom.)<\/p>\n

\"dorsettTalking about TV, the 40″ tv has international and cable, but I bought my USB to watch my own movies. Worked without a hitch.<\/p>\n

\"dorsettThe room is fully equipped with iron, ironing board, hairdryer, etc etc. But what is most important to me, and what I’m most grateful over is free wifi<\/strong> in the room. You may be amazed that many mega chain hotels don’t provide free wifi. What are we? Still living in the stone age?<\/p>\n

\"dorsettYou know me, I’m a very picky person, but the room is perfect in every way.<\/p>\n

Besides the smart and beautiful design of the room, besides the amenities provided in the room, the location of the hotel is superb. It is situated at Outram Park MRT, so you can take a lift up from MRT to Hotel. Very accessible.<\/p>\n

\"whatStill on location: When people ask me for food recommendations, I always tell them to go to the Bermuda Triangle of Eateries–Chinatown<\/a>, Outram Park<\/a>, and Tanjong Pagar<\/a>–because restaurants here “disappear” quickly. A very high turnover rate means the competition is stiff; if an eatery can survive here, it can survive anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n

And Dorsett is at the heart of this Bermuda Triangle;\u00a0important restaurants and great hawker centres are within 5-10 minutes walk. For examples,\u00a0Keong Saik Road<\/a>, Teo Hong Road<\/a>, Tanjong Pagar Road<\/a>, Ann Siang Hill<\/a>, Club Street<\/a>, Duxton<\/a>, Chinatown<\/a>, Chinatown Food\u00a0Centre, Smith Street, Pearl’s Centre, Hong Lim Food Centre, and Maxwell Food Centre. And these places open till late night<\/a>, so you can head out to eat any time.<\/p>\n

More specific examples: the #5 best restaurant in Asia, Restaurant Andre<\/a>, and the best patisserie in Singapore, Mad About Sucre<\/a>, are just beside Dorsett. My all-time favorite restaurant, which ranks #30 best in Asia, Burnt Ends<\/a>, is 5 minutes’ walk away. I’ve always highly recommended travelers to access Singapore culture through the modern Peranakan cuisine offered by Candlenut<\/a> at Dorsett itself. During our staycation, Mr Fitness and I supped at one of our favorite nasi lemak joints, Mount Faber Nasi Lemak<\/a>, just 5 minutes’ walk.<\/p>\n

\"dorsettSince we are on the topic of getting around Dorsett, the high-tech carpark, that allows double-deck parking, is run by a third-party operator. No complimentary parking but the hotel provides a discounted rate of $8\/entry even if you park there for days. $8\/entry isn’t a bad tradeoff, considering the location and room amenities.<\/p>\n

As we were leaving the hotel, I asked Mr Fitness if he could give any constructive feedback to the hotel. None. I’ve a feeling that the hotel has learnt from their own past experiences and other hotels’ experiences to maximize comfort for travelers during the stay; it’s really quite a smart hotel. Compared to some 5-star hotels<\/a>, I prefer the 4-star Dorsett because it’s chic, eclectic, convenient, comfortable, and high-tech.<\/p>\n
