People say that the cafe culture is dying in Singapore. It is not true, patrons\u00a0still go to cafes; it’s just that the economic downturn has affected the pockets of parents who fund their children to pursue their dreams of opening cafes.<\/p>\n

How does the poor economy affect the cafe culture in Singapore? I prognosticated the trend\u00a0earlier this year and it\u00a0has become more pronounced:<\/p>\n

-less capital means smaller shop space, which in turn means\u00a0that cafes focus on takeaway items;<\/p>\n

-that also means that cafes have to become more specialized, like ice cream shops or cake shops;<\/p>\n

-new independent cafe owners have to open in residential and heartland areas to cut costs;<\/p>\n

-since it’s risky for green birds who are interested to open a cafe at this time, and since shops still have to be rented out, many established cafes take the opportunity to expand and open their second or nth outlet. Investors with strong backing are also moving in.<\/p>\n

Of course, like many generalizations, there are exceptions. But I present to you 16\u00a0cafes and takeaway kiosks as proof of my generalizations:<\/p>\n
