The small plates. The free spread that tells you, in Korea, how serious a kitchen is before anything else lands.

Here, they were normal. Meh. Nothing wrong with them. Nothing to remember either. They filled the table and did their job. I ate them without thinking. That’s the honest verdict.

In Korea, the banchan can stop you. These didn’t. But I wasn’t here for the side dishes.

The Spicy Stir-Fried Octopus

<img data-recalc-dims="1" height="681" width="1024" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/rubbisheatrubbishgrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/3-Obong-Zip-in-Singapore.webp?resize=1024%2C681&ssl=1" alt="A dish of stir-fried octopus and cabbage in spicy red sauce, garnished with sesame seeds, on a white plate. The danger with octopus is texture. Cook it too long and it goes to rubber. Cook it without care and it weeps water into the sauce.

Not here.

The octopus stayed crunchy. Real bite. The cabbage held its crunch too — not wilted, not drowned. The sauce carried heat without burying anything underneath it.

It came with rice, seaweed, and a small meatball component. You mix it yourself into the bowl. Wrap it in seaweed if you want. There’s something honest about a dish that asks you to finish the work. You build each bite the way you like it.

Clean flavours. Clear intention.

The Steamed Egg

The steamed egg arrived in its hot stone bowl, still rising over the rim.

I’ve eaten this side a hundred times across Korea. It’s simple. Egg, water, salt, heat. Easy to make. Easy to ruin.

This was the best I’ve had outside Korea.

Soft. Custardy. Trembling. Seasoned just enough to taste like itself and nothing more. The kind of thing you don’t order on purpose but keep reaching back for.

This dish shut me up for a moment.

The Japchae

Glass noodles, tossed with vegetables and more ingredients than most kitchens bother with.

Japchae looks easy and almost never is. The noodles clump if you rush them. The vegetables turn limp if you don’t time the wok. Too much sesame oil and the whole thing goes greasy.

This was well executed. The noodles held their slip and chew. The vegetables stayed bright. Generous, too – they didn’t skimp on what went in.

Done properly. That’s harder than it sounds.

The Bossam

<img data-recalc-dims="1" height="681" width="1024" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/rubbisheatrubbishgrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/7-Obong-Zip-in-Singapore.webp?resize=1024%2C681&ssl=1" alt="A plate of thinly sliced, steamed pork belly garnished with black sesame seeds. The belly was tender without falling apart. Each slice held its layers — fat and meat doing their quiet work together. You take a piece, lay on the kimchi, fold in the radish, and eat it whole.

I’ve had bossam in a lot of places. Across Singapore. Across the region. This was the best I’ve found in this city, and the best I’ve had anywhere outside Korea.

I don’t say that lightly. My benchmark is too high to throw that around.

The fat carried flavour without weighing you down. The kimchi cut through it. The radish brought the cold, sharp lift it needed. Everything in its place. Nothing fighting.

Worth crossing the island for.

The Korean Pancake

The pancake came last. Thin. Crisp at the edges.

Most versions are heavy with flour. You taste the batter before you taste anything else. Here, the flour barely showed. It was all crackle and filling, light enough that you forget how much you’ve already eaten.

A small thing. Done with care.

Why I’d Come Back

<img data-recalc-dims="1" height="681" width="1024" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/rubbisheatrubbishgrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/9-Obong-Zip-in-Singapore.webp?resize=1024%2C681&ssl=1" alt="Empty dishes and scattered utensils on a cluttered dining table, remnants of a meal. The bar is set somewhere I can’t pretend I haven’t seen. Most places give you a decent meal and a faint reminder of what you’re missing back in Seoul.

Obong Zip didn’t leave me missing anything.

The banchan was forgettable. I’ll say that plainly. But the octopus, the steamed egg, the japchae, the bossam; those held up against memories I carry from the source. That’s rare. That’s the part I keep turning over.

There was no performance here. No spectacle. Just a kitchen cooking food the way it should be cooked, sending it out hot, and trusting the food to speak.

It did.

I came in skeptical. I left already thinking about the bossam.
