So I did what most people do now. I typed “cafe near me” into my phone and let the screen decide for me.

Pony White came up. Strong reviews. Photos that looked more interesting than the usual smashed avocado parade. That was enough. I walked in.

Let’s not waste time. Here’s what’s actually good.

The Coffee

I judge a Melbourne cafe by its coffee before anything reaches the table. This is a city that takes it seriously, and Pony White holds up.

The coffee was great. Clean, balanced, no bitterness fighting the milk. The latte was good — warm, smooth, the kind you finish without thinking. It did what a latte should do and asked for nothing back.

They also carry the novelty drinks. Matcha strawberry latte. Tiramisu latte. The usual Melbourne inventions that photograph better than they taste. I didn’t order them. I’ve had enough of these across enough cafes to know what they are. If that’s your thing, they’re there. I stayed with the coffee.

The Poached Eggs

Poached eggs, deep-fried mushrooms, pesto.

On paper, it reads busy. Too many ideas fighting for one plate. I expected the fried mushrooms to sit heavy against the soft eggs and drag the whole thing down.

They didn’t.

The eggs were poached properly. The whites held, the yolks ran when I broke them. The mushrooms brought a crisp edge and a deep, earthy note underneath. The pesto tied it together — bright, herbal, enough acid to lift the richness before it turned dull.

It worked. Each part knew what it was doing. Clean flavours, clear intention. I finished it without slowing down.

The French Toast

French toast, layered with fresh fruit and dusted with icing sugar.

This is a dish that hides laziness well. Soak bread, fry it, throw sugar on top, and most people won’t complain. But you can taste the difference when someone actually cares.

Here, they cared. The toast held structure without going soggy in the middle. The fruit was fresh, not the tired garnish you get when it’s been sitting since morning. The icing sugar stayed a whisper, not a snowdrift.

Well executed. No notes worth writing down. It did its job and did it right.

The Pulled Pork Bun

This was the surprise.

The bun looked hard when it landed. The kind of crust that makes you brace for a jaw workout. I picked it up expecting to fight it.

I was wrong.

The bread was soft. Genuinely soft, under a crust that only looked severe. It gave easily, held the filling without falling apart, and never turned to a chore.

And the pork inside was the reason to order it. Well-flavoured. Properly seasoned all the way through, not just sauced on the surface the way lazy kitchens do it. It had depth. It had care. It was the thing I’d remember from this visit, if I remembered anything at all.

This dish shut me up for a moment. I did not expect that from a bun I almost skipped.

What Pony White Is

Here’s the honest part.

Everything I ate was good. The coffee was better than good. The pulled pork bun genuinely surprised me. Nothing on the table disappointed me, and nothing felt overpriced. The value was fair. You pay what the food is worth, and you leave satisfied.

But satisfied is not the same as moved.

I’ve eaten in a lot of cafes across a lot of cities. Melbourne carries some of the best. And the ones that stay with me — the ones I cross a suburb for — do something more than get it right. They give you a reason to come back before you’ve even left.

Pony White didn’t do that. Not for me.

It’s a good cafe. It’s just not a destination. And there’s no shame in that. Most places aren’t. Most places are exactly this — competent, warm, worth your time if you’re passing through. But this one sits out of the way. I only found it because I happened to be nearby, phone in hand, hungry and unfussed.

If it were around the corner from me, I’d go now and then. But it isn’t. And Melbourne gives you stronger reasons to travel for a meal. There are too many places to eat in Melbourne that leave a bigger impression to make a special trip here.

Would I Return

Probably not. Not because anything failed. Because nothing pulled hard enough to bring me across town again.

That’s the quiet truth about a lot of good food. It’s fine. It’s fair. It fills the afternoon and leaves you content. But it doesn’t leave a mark. You eat it, you enjoy it, and you move on without carrying it with you.

Pony White is one of those places. A solid meal on an ordinary day. A good coffee when you needed one. A pulled pork bun that earned a nod of respect before I paid and left.

If you find yourself nearby — shopping, waiting, killing an hour — walk in. Order the coffee. Order the pulled pork bun. You’ll leave content.

Just don’t cross the city for it. Save that for the places that ask you to.

Good food doesn’t always need to be more than good. Sometimes it just needs to be honest. This was.

I wasn’t looking for a story that day. I was looking for lunch.
