On most nights, that tells you something. But we were hungry, a group of us, and nobody wanted to wait. So we walked in.

Let’s not waste time. Here’s what actually happened.

The Duck

This is the shop’s name. Its whole identity. Peking duck, front and centre.

So I’ll start there.

The duck was dry. The skin should crackle and give, the meat underneath should stay tender. This did neither. It had lost its moisture somewhere between the oven and the plate.

And there was a smell. That raw, ducky note that a good kitchen knows how to cook out. Here it lingered. It sat under every bite and refused to leave.

When a shop puts a dish in its name, that dish carries the weight of everything. This one buckled.

I don’t say that to be harsh. I say it because it’s true.

The Salted Duck Soup

Here’s the surprise. The one dish I’d actually order again.

Salted duck with tofu, in a clear soup. It came quiet, no drama to it. But the balance was right. Not overly salty, the way these soups often are. The salt supported the broth instead of drowning it.

The tofu had soaked up the warmth. The duck in the soup carried more depth than the roasted version on the other plate. Same bird, treated with more care.

Clean flavours. Clear intention.

It made me wonder what this kitchen could do if the whole menu got this attention.

The Fried Cauliflower

Done well. Properly.

Crisp at the edges, tender inside, seasoned with a light hand. Nothing showy. Just a vegetable cooked by someone who knew when to pull it off the heat.

A small dish. But it did its job, and it did it right.

The Beancurd Skin

Bland. I’ll be honest.

It wasn’t offensive. It sat on the table, it filled a corner, and it did nothing wrong. It just did nothing at all. No seasoning worth noting, no character to hold onto.

Passable. That’s the kindest word I have for it.

The Dumplings

We ordered both. Boiled and pan-fried.

The same problem ran through both. The skin was too thick. It fought the filling instead of framing it. You chewed through dough before you reached anything worth reaching.

A dumpling lives or dies on that skin. Thin where it matters, holding just enough at the pleat. Get it wrong and the whole thing feels heavy, unfinished.

These were heavy.

What Was Actually Going On

Sit with the meal long enough and a pattern shows.

The sides were better than the main. The soup outshone the roast. The cauliflower held more care than the dumplings. And the duck — the dish this shop is built around — was the weakest thing we ate.

That’s backwards.

You come to a Peking duck house for the duck. Everything else is meant to circle it, support it, send you home thinking about it. Here, the duck was the thing I wanted to forget, and the vegetables were what kept the meal afloat.

I keep returning to the empty room. No queue on a night when every neighbour was full. At the time it felt like luck. By the end of the meal, it felt like a warning we’d walked past.

The Bill

Pricey. More than the food asked for.

I don’t mind paying when the plate earns it. A dry duck and thick dumplings don’t earn it. You feel the gap between what you handed over and what you actually ate.

And that gap matters more here than most places, because Jurong doesn’t leave you short of options. There’s good Chinese food all around. Better duck. Better dumplings. Even a comforting bowl from Hup Lok feels like money better spent when you’re after a satisfying meal. Kitchens that would’ve treated that bird with the respect it deserved.

We just chose the one without the wait. That was the mistake.

Would I Return

No.

Not out of spite. The soup was genuinely good. The cauliflower too. If this were a small tze char stall making that duck soup and those greens, I’d nod and come back for exactly those two things.

But it isn’t. It’s a Peking duck house. And the duck is the one dish it can’t afford to get wrong. It got it wrong.

Some meals stay with you for the right reasons. A bowl of broth on a tired night. A dumpling that reminds you of somewhere. This one stayed with me for the wrong ones.

If you’re in Jurong, hungry, standing in front of a shorter queue than everyone else — take the pause. Ask yourself why the line is short.

Then walk the extra few doors down.
