A standup show. The food was an afterthought, the thing you order because the table needs filling while you wait for the laughs.

That’s the honest frame for everything I’m about to say. This was never a dining decision. It was a night out that happened to come with a menu.

So let’s talk about what landed on the table.

The Octopus

Deep-fried tentacles, a squeeze of lemon over the top.

This was good. The batter stayed light, the octopus underneath held its bite without turning to rubber. The lemon cut through the fry and kept it from feeling heavy. You reach for the next piece before you finish the first.

Clean flavours. Clear intention. A dish that knew exactly what it was.

The Burrata

This one surprised me.

Burrata, sitting with salad, tomatoes, greens. Standard so far. Then two large youtiao arrived alongside it. Fried dough sticks. The kind you dip into congee on a slow morning.

I’ve never seen that pairing before. The soft, milky burrata against the crisp, savoury youtiao. It shouldn’t work on paper. It mostly did. There’s something honest about a kitchen willing to try a thing that might fall flat. This one held.

The Grilled Pork

One of the better plates of the night.

Grilled pork in a brown sauce. The danger with pork is toughness — cook it too long and it fights you. This didn’t. It stayed tender. The sauce sat on top without drowning the meat underneath.

I’d order it again. That’s a rare line from me tonight.

The Brussels Sprouts

Burnt to perfection.

I mean that. Not scorched. Not bitter. Charred right to the edge where the leaves crisp and the smoke turns sweet. The kind of char that takes attention, not neglect.

One of the best things I ate. A vegetable that behaved like it mattered.

The Fries

And here’s the one I keep thinking about.

French fries with a special coating. I don’t know exactly what was in it. I only know they were the best item on the table.

Crisp on the outside. A coating that held its crunch and carried a little seasoning I couldn’t place. Fluffy inside. Fries are easy to make and easy to ruin, and most kitchens land somewhere forgettable in between.

These didn’t. This dish shut me up for a moment.

The Burger

Decent. Extra patties, cheese, mushrooms stacked in.

It filled the table and did its job. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing I’d cross a room for either. A burger that showed up, fed me, and stepped aside.

The Cocktails

Average. And overpriced for average.

That’s the short version. They looked the part. They tasted like most cocktails do when the bar is more interested in the room than the glass. I finished one and didn’t reach for a second.

What Mama’s Shelter Actually Is

Sit with the meal and the pattern shows itself.

The best things on the table were bar food. The fries. The sprouts. The octopus. Small plates, made to eat with your hands while something else holds your attention. A show. A drink. A friend telling a story across the table.

It’s the kind of food experience that works better when you’re not sitting down to a formal meal; something I’ve felt at places like Simply Spanish at South Melbourne Market, where the paella is cooked outside and eaten on a bench.

That’s what this kitchen does well. Food you eat sideways, half-watching a stage, laughing between bites.

But that’s also its limit.

As a full restaurant, it felt forced. Like we’d assembled a proper dinner out of things that were never meant to add up to one. The pieces were good on their own. Together, they didn’t cohere into a meal I’d plan around.

And the price didn’t match the plate. For bar food — however well made — it asked a lot. You feel the gap between what you handed over and what you were actually eating.

Would I Return

For the food alone? No.

Not because it was bad. Most of it wasn’t. The pork was tender. The sprouts were the kind of thing I’d order again. Those fries genuinely surprised me.

But I don’t cross a city for bar food, no matter how good the coating on the fries. And I don’t build a dinner around plates that were meant to sit at the edge of a night, not the centre of it.

If Hirzi plays here again, I’ll come back. I’ll order the fries. I’ll order the sprouts. I’ll let the food do what it does best — keep the table busy while the real reason I came takes the stage.

That’s the honest place for Mama’s Shelter. Not a destination. A good table for a good night, with food that knows its role and plays it well.

Come for the show.
