The restaurant serves Malay home-style cooking in a space considerably more dressed up than the word kampung might suggest: timber, rattan, greenery, woven lamps and enough design intent to remind you that you are still dining beneath the Petronas Twin Towers.

This is kampung cooking after putting on a nice shirt.

Fortunately, at least some of the food can carry the setting.

Ayam Bakar Lomak Pucuk Paku: The One We Would Return For

The Ayam Bakar Lomak Pucuk Paku (RM50) was easily our favourite dish.

We are already biased because masak lomak cili padi is one of those gravies we have very little resistance against. Closely associated with Negeri Sembilan, the style revolves around coconut milk and cili padi, with the cuisine famously comfortable with heat.

Cili Kampung’s version got the most important part right: the gravy had body.

It was not one of those watery yellow soups where the coconut milk seems to have merely passed through the kitchen. There was enough coconut milk to give it richness and a proper coating consistency, while lemongrass came through gently in the aroma without making the whole thing taste like somebody had emptied an aromatherapy diffuser into dinner.

The chicken had been smoked before going into the gravy. We liked the balance. There was enough smokiness to register behind the coconut and chilli without dominating them. But for hardcore smoke enthusiasts, they may want something more aggressive.

We did not.

The RM50 portion came with four decently sized chicken pieces and could comfortably feed three to four people as part of a shared meal. Pucuk paku gave the gravy some greenery and texture but this remained very much a chicken-and-lomak affair.

And yes, it was spicy.

But this is masak lomak cili padi. Complaining that it contains chilli would be like reviewing ice kacang and being surprised by the ice.

Ayam Masak Kicap: Good, Just Less Exciting

The Ayam Masak Kicap (RM40) was the sensible one at the table.

The chicken pieces were again a decent size, covered in a dark soy-based gravy that stayed more savoury than sugary. That restraint helped because ayam masak kicap can become cloying very quickly when sweetness starts running the operation.

Here, it did not.

The sauce had enough depth to eat happily with rice, and the chicken did its job.

There was nothing particularly wrong with it. There was also nothing that made us put down the spoon and conduct an emergency discussion about ayam masak kicap.

Good dish. Probably not the dish we would cross KL for.

Terung Goreng Belacan: Bring a Drink

Then came the Terung Goreng Belacan (RM24).

This surprised us most, although not necessarily for the reason a restaurant would put on a poster.

It was ridiculously hot.

The first bite was manageable. Then the chilli accumulated. By the third or fourth bite, every piece of eggplant seemed to require an accompanying sip of water.

The funny thing is that the heat does not necessarily hit immediately. It builds in the mouth until suddenly the table has become very interested in its drinks.

If you love fried anchovies, there are plenty scattered throughout the dish, providing salt and a very pronounced crunch. They were crisp without reaching the jaw-testing hardness we encountered at Lesong by Johara, which we appreciate because dinner should not require dental insurance.

Beyond that, though, this is a simple fried eggplant dish. It is one of Cili Kampung’s signatures, but for us the chilli was considerably more memorable than the terung itself.

The Drinks Did Their Job

We had the Lychee Lime and Rose and Kopi Kampung Ais.

The former tasted exactly as advertised: lychee upfront, lime kept under control and a noticeable rose note. Refreshing, especially after the terung had begun its campaign of violence.

The kopi was basic iced coffee.

That is the review. We don’t really like to write an in-depth reviews about the drinks because most of the time they’re pretty straightforward. But this time round, we’ll give it a spotlight thanks to the fiery eggplant.

Is Cili Kampung KLCC Worth It?

For us, the Ayam Bakar Lomak Pucuk Paku was the clear reason to return. The gravy was rich without becoming heavy, properly spicy and balanced by just enough smoke from the chicken.

The ayam masak kicap was dependable. The terung goreng belacan was mostly a chilli endurance test.

Would we come back? Yes, particularly with a group so we could explore more of the menu.

Cili Kampung serves good Malay food in surroundings far removed from an actual kampung. We can live with the contradiction.

Just keep a cold drink beside the terung.

After Lesong by Johara, Cili Kampung became our second stop in this unofficial tour of eating masakan kampung in increasingly polished surroundings.
