Not to eat.

I’ve always kept the cafes here at a distance. Too many feel built for people passing through. A view of the water, a menu that plays it safe, a price that assumes you won’t be back. I’ve walked this strip enough times to stop expecting much from it.

So I crossed the dock, away from the main stretch.

That’s where I found Eighteen Pence Lane.

The Room Told Me First

It was a weekday. The place was full.

There was a queue at the counter and a steady stream of takeaway orders going out in paper bags. The people waiting weren’t tourists. I saw hi-vis vests and dusty boots. Construction workers on their break stood beside locals who clearly knew the menu without looking.

Construction workers don’t queue for hype. They queue for food that’s worth the walk and worth the money.

That told me more than any review could. I joined the line.

I’ve stood in another long Melbourne cafe queue before and learned that a crowd doesn’t automatically mean the food is worth waiting for. Here, though, the queue felt different. It looked like habit rather than hype.

The Steak and Eggs

I ordered the steak and eggs. Around AUD$30.

The steak came properly charred. It was dark at the edges, with the bitter crust you only get when the pan is hot and the cook leaves it alone. Inside, it gave easily. Not tough. I suspect it had been tenderised, because the texture was a little too even. But it worked. Chew, then give, then the char again.

Three sunny side up eggs sat beside it. Three, not two. The whites were set all the way through, with no glassy patches. The yolks were intact, ready to be broken over the meat.

Simple. Nobody cut corners.

For 30 dollars in Melbourne, with that much on the plate, I had no complaints.

The Khai Kratha

Then I saw it on the menu. Khai Kratha.

I stopped reading for a second.

Khai Kratha is a Thai breakfast. Eggs go into a small pan with toppings like Chinese sausage, minced pork and luncheon meat, which westerners might call meat loaf. I’d eaten it in Thailand before this trip, early in the morning, the pan still hissing when it landed in front of me.

I didn’t expect to find it in a Docklands cafe.

So I ordered it.

The version here is deconstructed. The eggs, Chinese sausage, luncheon meat and minced pork are all there, but they’re arranged side by side rather than cooked together in one pan. Each part was fine on its own. The sausage carried its sweetness. The luncheon meat brought salt. The pork held its seasoning.

But Khai Kratha works because everything cooks together. The egg takes on the fat of the sausage. The pork settles into the yolk. Here, the pieces stayed separate instead of becoming one thing.

Decent. But the Thais do it better.

I’ll say that plainly. I’ll also say this: I’d order it again. It doesn’t beat the original. But someone in this kitchen thought to put it on a Melbourne cafe menu at all, and cooked it with care. That counts for something.

The Breakfast Platter

The breakfast platter was nothing to shout about.

It came with sourdough, hashbrowns and mushrooms. All correct. None of it asked me to slow down.

Except the smashed avocado.

That was the strong part of the plate. It was seasoned properly, and the texture was left rough rather than whipped into paste. It tasted like someone had checked it before sending it out.

On a plate of fillers, the avocado did the real work.

The Drinks

I had a latte and a hot chocolate.

Both were decent. Melbourne sets a high bar for coffee, and this cleared it without fuss. The drinks aren’t the reason to come, and they aren’t a reason to stay away.

What Makes It Work

Sit with it for a while and the shape of the place shows.

Running a cafe in Melbourne is not easy. Competition is everywhere, and every corner has someone pulling a good shot and plating eggs on sourdough. To stand out, you need good food. To survive, you need to handle a crowd without the kitchen falling apart. You also need prices people will keep paying, week after week, without the numbers sinking you.

Most places manage one of those. Some manage two.

Eighteen Pence Lane seemed to manage all three on a busy weekday. The queue moved. The takeaway bags kept going out. The plates came out hot. Nobody behind the counter looked overwhelmed.

It works on two things: value, and a menu that goes wider than it needs to.

There’s steak and eggs for the worker who needs a real meal and a breakfast platter for the safe order. And there’s Khai Kratha for anyone who has eaten it somewhere far from here and wants to remember.

That range is rare in Docklands. Rarer still is a room full of people who live and work nearby and keep choosing to come back. Melbourne has enough great places to eat that nobody needs to settle for a cafe simply because it’s convenient. Eighteen Pence Lane gives you an actual reason to cross the dock.

Would I Return

Yes.

Not for the platter. Not for the coffee, though it was fine. I’d come back for the Khai Kratha.

I know it isn’t the version I ate in Thailand. The pan isn’t hissing, and the pieces don’t come together the way they should. But finding it here, across the dock from a strip I’d written off, meant something. It took me back to a morning somewhere else.

Next time I’m in Melbourne, I’ll cross the dock again. I’ll join the queue behind the hi-vis vests and order the Khai Kratha, and maybe the steak too.

If you’re nearby, skip the strip. Walk across the water and stand in line with the locals.

I was in Docklands to shop.
