Tables sit close enough that you become temporarily invested in what the people beside you ordered, although it was quiet when we arrived so the lack of personal space was not yet a problem. The menu is fairly classic cafe territory, with cooked breakfasts, Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale, waffles, sandwiches and coffee. We ordered more than necessary anyway.

Eggs Royale: Small Plate, Very Good Breakfast

Our Eggs Royale came with free-range poached eggs, Scottish smoked salmon, an English muffin and hollandaise. When it landed, our first reaction was basically: Oh. That’s it?

We have clearly been corrupted by brunch portions closer to home. After plates like the loaded breakfast we had at Nimmies Pastry Cafe JB, this Eggs Royale looked almost suspiciously modest. Once we started eating, though, we stopped complaining.

The smoked salmon was the highlight. It had enough smoke to give it character without that aggressively cured, almost fishy aftertaste some smoked salmon can have. It was soft, clean-tasting and salty enough to work against the egg and muffin. The hollandaise brought buttery richness and a gentle tang, tying everything together without drowning the salmon.

Small? Yes. Did we actually need a larger portion? Probably not.

Veggie Breakfast and Our First Potato Scone

The Veggie Breakfast was more substantial: vegetarian sausages, a fried egg, tomato, mushrooms, beans, potato scone and toast.

The sausages were a little dry, although we can hardly complain that a vegetarian sausage failed to release glorious rivers of animal fat. More importantly, they had actual seasoning. They were savoury and herby enough to taste like somebody had considered flavour rather than simply shaping a beige meat substitute into a sausage.

Everything else did its job. Mushrooms, beans, toast, egg. Dependable breakfast supporting cast.

The unfamiliar member of the plate was the potato scone, or tattie scone, a Scottish breakfast staple traditionally made mainly from potato and flour. Ours was thin, soft and starchy with a gently savoury potato flavour, sitting somewhere between bread and a very flat potato cake.

Was it love at first bite? No.

But we understood its purpose after eating it with the rest of the plate. It is mild enough to soak up beans and egg without competing with anything. Something new is not automatically something wonderful, but we were glad our first proper Scottish breakfast introduced us to it.

The Belgium Waffles Were Our Favourite

Then the Belgium Waffles with Golden Syrup and Mixed Berries arrived and all attempts at sensible breakfast ordering ended.

We already have a weakness for Belgian-style waffles, and this one hit exactly where it needed to. It came warm, soft and fluffy, drenched in enough golden syrup to make sweetness a central feature rather than a background note. The cafe’s menu allows the waffles with golden syrup and mixed berries, so naturally we chose both.

For us, it worked beautifully.

The mixed berries were important because all that syrup on its own could have become exhausting. Their tartness cut straight through the sweetness, resetting the palate before the next sticky forkful.

Sweet waffle, sharp berries, then back to sweet waffle. Very simple. Very effective.

It reminded us of waffles we had eaten in Belgium, which probably explains why we were particularly happy with it. This was also the rare occasion where we appreciated the modest portion. Any larger and the golden syrup might have won.

Hot Chocolate and the Coffee Revelation

The Hot Chocolate was our first cup of the trip, and thankfully it was a good place to start.

This was not the dark, intensely chocolate-heavy kind that feels halfway to melted dessert. Milk was much more prominent, giving it a creamy, gentle character with enough chocolate flavour underneath.

Some people will want more cocoa intensity. We did not.

We liked that it tasted comforting rather than aggressively chocolatey and sweet.

The Latte, however, gave us a small identity crisis.

None of us are coffee people in the serious sense. We drink it. We enjoy it. But ask us to identify tasting notes and there is a strong possibility we will say, “coffee?”

We have also heard people describe coffee as smooth, bitter or acidic for years without being entirely sure what they were detecting.

Then we drank this latte. It was genuinely smooth, with none of the sharpness we sometimes get from coffee and very little bitterness lingering afterwards. For once, “smooth coffee” stopped sounding like something printed on a bag of beans and became an actual sensation.

Maybe it was the beans. Maybe it was the preparation. Maybe Scottish air improves coffee.

Our qualifications end here.

Was Word of Mouth Leith a Good Find?

By the time we finished, the quiet little cafe we had walked into was full. With the tables packed so closely together, getting out became a polite exercise in bags, chairs and repeated sorry, sorry as we squeezed towards the door.

That crowd felt deserved.

The Veggie Breakfast was solid rather than spectacular, and our first potato scone did not trigger a new obsession. But the Eggs Royale was genuinely good, the waffles were the easy favourite, and both drinks left a stronger impression than expected.

Word of Mouth Leith is not a sprawling brunch cafe designed for spending half the afternoon inside. It is compact, busy and refreshingly straightforward. If you are staying around Leith and want a proper breakfast without turning it into an event, this is an easy place to recommend.

We walked in because Google said 4.6.

We left glad we listened to Google for once.

We found Word of Mouth Leith the way many hungry travellers find breakfast: opened Google, saw a 4.6 rating and thought, fine, 4.6 is convincing enough.
