Everyone has an opinion, somebody wants dim sum, somebody wants fish, and one uncle has already rejected three suggestions without contributing a fourth.

Singapore’s Chinese food scene is enormous. You can go from bak kut teh and xiao long bao to fiery Sichuan cuisine, delicate Teochew cuisine, roast meats and exquisite Cantonese cuisine without leaving the island. There are grand hotel dining rooms, neighbourhood institutions and enough chefs being introduced as master chefs to start a small culinary parliament.

For this list, we focused on restaurants where the food itself gave us a reason to remember the meal, not just somewhere with expensive crockery and very enthusiastic service staff.

A warning before we begin: this is not really an affordable Chinese restaurant guide for the Chinatown MRT crowd. Most of these are places for a business lunch, family gatherings, entertaining business partners or those once-in-a-while celebratory dinners when everyone suddenly agrees that abalone is necessary.

If your craving is more hawker centre than hotel dining room, our guide to the best Hokkien mee in Singapore goes firmly in the other direction.

This list it not ranked.

Summer Pavilion Does Cantonese Cuisine Without Hiding Behind Luxury Ingredients

There is a particular danger with luxury Cantonese restaurants. Sometimes the ingredients become so expensive that nobody dares do much to them. At Summer Pavilion, that restraint is actually the point.

The Michelin-starred Summer Pavilion at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore is one of the clearest examples of Chinese fine dining done properly. The double-boiled fish bone soup with fish maw is where we would start. It arrives pale and almost modest-looking, then turns out to have a rich, gelatinous body that coats the mouth without tasting aggressively salty. The fish maw gives it that soft, collagen-heavy texture, while the broth stays clean enough that you can still taste what went into it.

The braised South African abalone with oyster sauce is another good example. Glossy, savoury and rich, but still controlled. Lunch is also when the dim sum menu becomes especially tempting, with delicate handcrafted dim sum that feels more precise than showy.

This is exquisite Cantonese cuisine for people who notice the difference between richness and heaviness.

Summer Pavilion is unmistakably an upscale Chinese restaurant, but it does not rely on expensive ingredients alone to justify the bill. The impeccable service helps, of course, but the food still has to carry the evening.

If luxury dried seafood does nothing for you, skip the highest-priced abalone and bird’s nest dishes. You do not need them to understand why this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in town.

Summer Pavilion

Address: Level 3, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, 7 Raffles Avenue, Singapore 039799

Opening Hours: Daily, 11:30am-2:30pm; 6:30pm-10:30pm

Shisen Hanten Gives Chinese Cuisine Proper Sichuan Heat

A list of Chinese restaurants in Singapore becomes very boring very quickly if every entry serves Cantonese roast duck or beijing duck.

So, Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro.

The Michelin-starred restaurant specialises in Chūka Szechwan Ryori, the Chen family’s Japanese interpretation of Sichuan cooking, with enough Sichuan and Cantonese cuisines crossover to keep the menu broad without feeling confused.

Of all its signature dishes, Chen’s Mapo Tofu is the one we would order without discussion. Silky tofu sits in a dark, intensely savoury sauce built around fermented broad bean paste, chilli and Sichuan peppercorn. There is heat, obviously, and enough numbing spice to wake everybody up, but what kept us eating was the fermented depth underneath it. Good mapo tofu should not taste like someone merely increased the chilli setting.

The stir-fried Hokkaido Mangalica pork is another strong order. Fatty pork belly takes on fermented bean sauces that bring sweetness, savouriness and a slow-building richness. The kitchen also turns out char siew and dim sum, useful when someone at the table has suddenly remembered they do not actually like spicy food.

The Level 35 setting helps too. It is a classy restaurant with city views, private dining rooms and suitably attentive service, so it works equally well for a corporate meal or a fancy dinner.

Skip it if what you really want is strictly traditional Chengdu cooking. The Japanese-Chinese lineage is part of Shisen Hanten’s identity, not something the restaurant is trying to hide.

Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro

Address: Level 35, Hilton Singapore Orchard, 333 Orchard Road, Singapore 238867

Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 12pm-3pm; Sat, Sun & PH 11:30am-3:15pm; dinner daily 6pm-10:30pm

Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine Proves Chinese Food Does Not Need Heavy Sauce

The ION Orchard outlet of Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine holds one Michelin star, but the food itself is much quieter than that accolade sounds.

That is authentic Teochew cuisine for you. Freshness first, seasoning second.

The chilled crab is the obvious example. Sweet crab meat arrives without being buried under sauce, usually accompanied by black vinegar, ginger or Puning bean sauce. The whole point is that the crab should still taste unmistakably like crab.

We also like the Three Kinds of Marinated Combination, which gives you the deep soy perfume and gentle spice of Teochew braising without turning the whole plate into a salt bomb. The steamed coral trout is another dish where the kitchen refuses to panic. Salted vegetables and tomato sharpen the natural sweetness of the fish instead of burying it.

This is the restaurant for people who believe expensive seafood should still taste like seafood. There are five private rooms, making it a sensible choice for quieter family meals and business dinners too.

One warning: if your actual mission is Super Peking Duck, go to Imperial Treasure’s dedicated concept instead. There is even a Super Peking Duck outlet at Jewel Changi Airport, while other Imperial Treasure concepts can be found around Marina Bay Sands. The dining room continues the contemporary-art mood, while Chef Jereme Leung’s cooking pulls from different regional traditions across China rather than simply giving classic Cantonese cuisine prettier plates.

One of the dishes that captures the restaurant well is the cucumber with poached sea whelk. The cucumber is cut into an intricate spiral, giving every bite crunch before the firmer sea whelk takes over. It looks theatrical but still eats like food, which is an important distinction in fine dining.

Then move into the stronger flavours: Sichuan spicy chicken, pork belly with black garlic or one of the changing seasonal dishes. This is where the modern twist works best because Leung is not trying to turn every familiar recipe into foam and confusion.

Private dining is available, and reservations are a good idea.

Come here when you want Chinese fine dining that does not feel like the same hotel banquet with different wallpaper.

What would we skip? Playing safe. Crisp skin, thin pancakes, sauce, cucumber, the whole ceremony. The roast suckling pig is another classic if the table is large enough to justify it, while the dim sum programme gets noticeably more modern, with combinations involving scallops, caviar and premium seafood.

The seafood is worth exploring too. Deep-fried cod with crab meat gives you flaky fish against a much richer topping, while some of the premium menus venture into Wagyu, abalone, lobster and even foie gras.

The temptation is to order everything because the diverse menu reads like somebody asked a Chinese banquet what it wanted to be when it grew up.

Resist.

Duck, dim sum, one seafood dish and vegetables will tell you more about the kitchen than an eight-course luxury marathon.

This is one of those places that suits family gatherings and a proper business lunch equally well. Private dining is available too, and weekends are worth booking ahead.

Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant

Address: Level 3, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, 320 Orchard Road, Singapore 238865

Opening Hours: Daily, 11:30am-3pm; 6pm-10pm

Wah Lok Is One of the Best Chinese Restaurants for Old-School Dim Sum

Some restaurants want you to know immediately that they have reinvented Chinese dining. Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant has been at Carlton Hotel Singapore since 1988 and appears perfectly happy not reinventing your char siew bun.

That confidence is why we like it.

The Baked Barbecue Pork Buns are the obvious starting point: a crumbly, lightly sweet crust around sticky char siew. Then come the Steamed Seafood Egg White Dumplings, where the wrapper is thin enough that the seafood remains the main event rather than something imprisoned in starch.

At dinner, move beyond dim sum. Lobster vermicelli is the kind of dish made for a lazy Susan and several people with chopsticks ready, while roast meats and claypot dishes give you the comforting, recognisable side of traditional Chinese cuisine.

Wah Lok feels like a restaurant that would rather cook the classics properly than explain a concept to you for five minutes.

That is also why we would skip it if the objective is culinary theatre. No secret doors, no smoke machine, no garnish that requires a biography. Just reliable Cantonese cooking and a room full of people who knew exactly why they booked.

Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant

Address: Level 2, Carlton Hotel Singapore, 76 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189558

Opening Hours: Lunch Mon-Sat 11:30am-2:30pm; Sun & PH 11am-2:30pm. It now sits inside Frasers House, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Singapore, rather than its former InterContinental setting.

Its newer signature dishes are much more theatrical too. The Chef’s Combination 2.0 is basically the modern descendant of a four combination platter, pulling cold kitchen, roast, hot kitchen and dim sum elements into one combination platter. Then there is the Kung Fu Soup, presented in a teapot, and the 3.33 Pork Ribs, finished tableside.

We normally get nervous when dinner starts developing choreography, but there is proper technique underneath it. The Eight Treasures Hulu Gourd Duck, for example, still relies on the sort of slow preparation and stuffing associated with old banquet cooking.

The presentation has changed. The kitchen has not forgotten the traditional techniques underneath it.

Weekend lunch is particularly dangerous because Man Fu Yuan runs an à la carte dim sum buffet. This is one of those situations where the word “unlimited” can quickly become a personal challenge.

Skip the buffet if you are a light eater. The à la carte signatures are more interesting than forcing yourself through basket number nine out of principle.

Man Fu Yuan

Address: Level 2, Frasers House, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Singapore, 80 Middle Road, Singapore 188966

Opening Hours: Weekday lunch 12pm-3pm; weekends & PH 11:30am-3pm; dinner daily 6pm-10pm

Hai Tien Lo Does Authentic Cantonese Cuisine at Pan Pacific Singapore

Hai Tien Lo at Pan Pacific Singapore, beside Marina Square, is the all-rounder on this list.

The kitchen still leans heavily on authentic Cantonese cuisine, but Executive Chinese Chef Edden Yap has introduced enough contemporary touches to stop the menu feeling frozen in hotel-restaurant amber. Fish stock is made in-house, meat preparation is handled internally and the team makes its own handcrafted dim sum daily.

One of the stronger newer dishes is the deep-fried Ibérico pork sparerib in creamy sauce with shredded lime. It sounds heavy, but that citrus lift is exactly what keeps the pork from becoming exhausting.

The steamed sea perch with aged Teochew preserved radish goes in the opposite direction, letting salty fermented flavour sharpen the fish. Then there is rice vermicelli with lobster and scallop in a sour tomato broth, the sort of noodle dish that looks mildly unconventional on a Cantonese menu until you taste how well the acidity works with sweet shellfish.

If you want more traditional roasted pork, dim sum or fried rice, those are here too.

Hai Tien Lo works because the modern dishes do not require you to abandon the classics. The room handles larger groups well, so it is also a good choice for big family dinners and business meals.

If the group decides Cantonese food is not happening after all, our Suntec City food guide has everything from PUTIEN and Din Tai Fung to Korean soup and udon nearby.

Hai Tien Lo

Address: Level 3, Pan Pacific Singapore, 7 Raffles Boulevard, Marina Square, Singapore 039595

Opening Hours: Daily, 11:30am-2:30pm; 6pm-10:30pm

Other Chinese Restaurants in Singapore Worth Knowing

The eight restaurants above barely scratch the surface. These did not make our main eight, but they are still useful depending on location, occasion and what kind of Chinese food you are craving.

Tien Court at Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore

For Teochew cuisine, Tien Court at Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore is another name worth keeping around. The restaurant offers à la carte dishes, set menus and dim sum, with the cooking leaning towards the cleaner flavours associated with Teochew food. Think seafood, braised dishes and lighter seasoning rather than sauces doing all the shouting.

Jia Wei at Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy

Over at Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy, Jia Wei has moved more strongly towards Nanyang cooking, blending Southern Chinese techniques with Southeast Asian ingredients. That gives the menu a different personality from the Cantonese-heavy restaurants above, with richer sauces, regional influences and dishes that feel more connected to Singapore’s broader Chinese food history.

Peach Garden at OCBC Centre

Peach Garden‘s OCBC Centre outlet is the one to remember when somebody insists the view should be part of dinner. The restaurant has floor to ceiling windows looking across the stunning views of CBD and Singapore skyline from over 30 storeys high. It is another upscale Chinese restaurant option for business dinners and family celebrations, with Cantonese favourites, dim sum and roast meats doing most of the heavy lifting.

Public Service Announcement: Chinese restaurant menus can change more often than people think. Old banquet favourites such as beggar’s chicken, elaborate combination platters and whole roasted meats may appear seasonally or require advance ordering, so it is worth checking the current menu before promising an entire table one specific dish.

And if your definition of a good Chinese restaurant Singapore is simply somewhere that feeds four people well without requiring a corporate expense claim, there are plenty of zi char and neighbourhood options too. This list is deliberately more occasion-driven.

So Which Are the Best Chinese Restaurants in Singapore?

For Cantonese cooking at its most polished, Summer Pavilion is our splurge. Shisen Hanten wins when we want Sichuan heat. Imperial Treasure is the obvious choice for authentic Teochew cuisine, while Yì is the one for contemporary Chinese fine dining.

That variety is really the point. Singapore’s Chinese dining scene is not one cuisine wearing different jackets. Cantonese, Sichuan, Teochew and Hunan cooking all have a place here, alongside regional styles that rarely get as much attention. Many of the better restaurants also build their menus around high-quality seafood, roast meats, slow-braised dishes and traditional recipes that have survived because nobody has found a convincing reason to replace them.

Wan Hao handles the big banquet mood, Wah Lok is our old-school dim sum pick, Man Fu Yuan brings more theatre, and Hai Tien Lo is the dependable all-rounder. There are flashier places, cheaper places and restaurants with more must try dishes than any human table can reasonably order.

The hard part is not finding excellent Chinese cuisine in Singapore. It is getting everyone at the table to agree on which kind.

Trying to name the best Chinese restaurant Singapore has is basically asking an extended family where to have reunion dinner.
