As none of you knows, I’ll be going back to New York for two months to do my research. (Don’t worry, I’ve a back log of food, so this blog won’t remain stagnant.) But because I’m poor, I need to save money. So I am starting a series called “何少省钱记 (The Diary of Master Ho Saving Money).”
So I was at Orchard alone the other day. Wanted to eat something cheap. I always wanted to try the food at Isetan Lido Supermarket, just beside the bakery, Sun Moulin, and Mos Burger. The stalls within the supermarket are great. They have various Japanese, Korean, Western cuisine.
So I chose Korean because it was the healthiest, and because it reminded me of my starving days in New York when I was a struggling artist, always eating at this cheap Korean place which packs the food exactly like this bento:
Since I am saving money, of course I had to choose the most expensive bento set right? Chicken Bento $9. The rest of the bento start from $4 upwards. You can ask the person to heat up your bento. The auntie from this stall was super sweet to me. To prevent my kimchi from heating up, she first took out the kimchi and put it aside, then she put the bento into the microwave. When it was done, she took the bento out and put the kimchi back in. Not only was she careful, she gave me an EXTRA kimchi. And gave me extra sauce, which was chilled, for the two kimchi. She’s dedicated, man. And I can’t help it that I’m an auntie killer.
So a warm meal with cold kimchi. Too bad I hate kimchi. Seriously, what is the point of having different vegetables if they are soaked in the same sauce that overwhelms the taste of all vegetables, making all the kimchis taste the same??
The meal tasted Korean, but I’m not the best judge since I don’t really like Korean food. The brown bean rice had green bean and black bean in it, but they didn’t bring out the sweetness of the rice. Which is fine, because rice is rice. The spicy chicken, which is usually found on hotplates, was alright, not very tender but not very tough either. It wasn’t oily, which is good.
The yellow thing that looked like omelette on the rice — I haven’t seen it before in Korean cuisine but I’m probably ignorant about it. It’s like one of those yong tofu items, beancurd skin wrapped around a meat. I think the meat is fish, which made the Yellow Thing taste like otah, but the bento set said this is Chicken Bento.
All in all, I like this set but I wonder if $9 is too expensive, for a bento set, without any waitering and without any seats to sit and eat. I had to bring the set out to the passageway where Lido displays its movie posters, and eat, with sympathy in the eyes of passersby, thinking, “Why is this guy so pathetic? Eating alone with no friends out here?” But then again, I saw a few cute boys. If you’re the cute malay-looking, chinese-looking boy in gray tee, message me!
Saving money #fail.
