Famosa Chicken Rice Ball Restoran

Hey! In case you don’t know this restaurant is famous, it’s called “Famosa,” meaning famous. Got this one from the wikitravel and it was dubious. There are four branches and this one we went to is at Jonker St, which is the old name for Jalan Hang Jebat (horrible new name). You can’t miss it. We ordered two types of chicken-kampong and roast (13 ringgit each)–and they were very tasty and tender, especially the kampong chicken, but the portions were small and it’s expensive considering Malacca’s price. The rice ball is machine-made so it tasted cold and horrible. Very compressed like glutinous rice.  I’ve eaten better hot rice balls in Singapore. Great ambience dining in a Peranakan-styled house. Said to be a tourist trap.

Restoran Peranakan

Located at 107 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (or formerly named Heeren St)–why do they butcher all the nice naming streets?!–we ordered the eggplant, beef rendang and buah keluak, the quintessential Peranakan dish. Again, Singapore has better Peranakan food, and the portions were small. 40++ ringgit for two persons.

AP Ayam Penyet Restoran

Mao Mao said that it would be lomantical if we had ayam penyet as our last meal in Malacca because it was what we had at Batam. This chain restaurant is found in Tesco, a building just beside the cock-with-balls-shaped bus terminal. (I’m serious, go google map and check out the terminal. The architecture is a cock with balls.) Anyway, what did we expect? Eating Indonesian food in Malaysia? and in a chain restaurant?? We were just asking for it, although my stingray came up very respectable. Moist within.

Harper’s Restaurant and Lounge

Along Melaka River. Very prominent bar. As you enter Jonker St, don’t enter but turn left immediately. We were there to chill and waited for time to pass on a hot afternoon. The two-storey building, painted in black and gold wordings, overhanging the river gives the bar a very relaxed and Venetian feel. But you pay for the ambience. We were the only Asians; others all Whites. I had a Mai Tai and Mao Mao had a beer, and the bill came up to 40++ ringgit, that’s the cost of a dinner for two in Malacca.
