These are some of the places I ate at recently:
Casa Brazilia

Tuesday-Friday, Lunch (À La Carte) 12pm-2:30pm
Sat – Sun – Public Holidays, Lunch (Barbecue Buffet): 12pm – 2:30pm

Casa Brazilia is a place I want to revisit soon. It’s a high-protein, low-carb buffet at $79+, with 12 different types and cuts of meats. The meats are really good quality and come hot. They provide table service, so they go to each table to serve instead of the hectic rushing at hotel buffets. If you want to eat a lot of meat on a certain day, I highly recommend this place. This place fulfils a function of the demand of high protein at a reasonable price. Video here.
Frying Fish Club
140 Owen Rd, Singapore 218940

My video for the Frying Fish Club went viral. There are several good fish and chips shops in Singapore: Smith’s, Dad & Lad, and Frying Fish has thrown its hat into contention. Their fish-and-chips are Japanese-inspired. They use a thin tempura batter and white tuna. It’s good. If you’re not into fish, they also do a good steak that pairs well with hummus. Video here.
Harummanis
37 Sultan Gate, Singapore 198485

Harummanis has its roots from a hawker stall in Teck Whye Lane in 1992. Taking over his parents, Chef Akmal Anuar has set up a fine dining Malay restaurant. We were there for lunch set ($37+), which consists of a main dish – we had beef lungs and fish – and rice with some sides. The sambal balachan is lit. The flavours are super tasty, but my rich friend commented that he could get nasi padang at hawker at 4 to 5 times lesser than price, why would he come here. The quality of the ingredients isn’t really impressive. Video here.
Kamakura Warabi Mochi
One Holland Village, Taste Orchard

This is the viral warabi mochi that demands long queue at One Holland Village but there was no queue at Taste Orchard where I went. I don’t understand the fuss. I like it, it’s nice and soft and pillowy, and if you put it in the fridge for the next day, it remains as soft. But it’s just Japanese muah chee. And I had similar quality before – at fancy sushi restaurants – so I’m not really taken by the softness. And it’s so expensive, it’s only flour and water, why is it so expensive? At 1/4 the price, you can get decent warabi mochi at Don Don Donki. Let me tell you, Kamakura’s quality is not 4 times that of Donki’s.
Ryu Ichi
14 Flanders Square, Singapore 209301
t: +65 8733 1414
Lunch: Tue – Sun 11.30am – 4pm
Dinner: daily: 5.30pm- 11pm
facebook / instagram

Ryu Ichi serves sushi omakase at $128. The course is not bad and I like that they avoid the more popular fish options, and that gives a unique, refreshing perspective. But I find their cooked dishes a bit heavy handed: the mentaiko on the lobster is too sweet, and so is the mini don of foies gras and waygu. But if you’re a beginner, keen to learn more about different types of sushi, then this is a good, unpretentious place to start. Video here.
Tai Er
313@Somerset, JEM, Jewel, Suntec, Paris Ris Mall

Tai Er has a new outlet at Paris Ris Mall but I visited the 313@Somerset outlet recently. It was my first time. They are famous for their spicy-salty fish 酸菜鱼 swimming in a broth. And it is super delicious and the portion is qute decent. I also ordered the spicy chicken 辣子鸡 and it is super tasty too. I’d definitely return.
