Singapore Foodie Reviews: SG Hawker Charcoal Burger in New York, Pan-fried Shanghainese Buns, and Bhutanese Cuisine

These are the recent places that I ate but posted only IGS and did not do a full review.

Ashes Burnnit
929 Tampines Street 91, #01-451 Singapore 520929
11.30am – 8.30pm
facebook / instagram
(Other outlets: 727 AMK, 883 Woodlands Street 82, 26 Teck Whye Lane, 69 Bedok South Ave 3, 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1, 505 Beach Road)

Ashes Burnnit (halal) has gotten so big that they have an outlet in New York! They specialise in charcoal buns. It’s not bad. The patties are tasty and juicy but the buns can get soggy. And it is quite costly. But worth a try at least once.

BaoTianXia 包天下
People’s Park,1 Park Road, Singapore 059108
9.30am – 9.30pm

BaoTianXia is a kiosk just outside of Chinatown MRT. They are famous for their Shanghainese pan-fried buns 生煎包, where buns are pan-fried, not steamed. The chicken bun is amazing, mindblowing, so juicy. The beef is good but definitely AVOID the vegetarian bun. And the best thing is they keep well. Put them in the fridge. Next morning, put them in a bowl and half a tsp of water in the microwave for 3 minutes. They puff up and taste as good as fresh.

Como Orchard
2nd floor, 28 Bideford Rd, Singapore 229922
t: +65  6304 2988

“A Taste of Bhutan” is a one-off event at Como Orchard and while I didn’t think it was especially tasty, it is an eye opener, rather educational about Bhutanese food. I didn’t know Bhutan eats so spicy. Most of their dishes are vegetarian. And they have river weed (like sea weed, only from the river).

Leckerbaer
Shaw House – Isetan Scotts, 350 Orchard Road #01-K2 & #01-K3 Singapore 238868
t: +65 6235 2069
Mon-Thu, Sun: 10.00 am – 8.30 pm
Fri-Sat: 10.00 am – 9.00 pm
(Outlet at Keong Saik)

Finally had an opportunity to visit this Copenhagen outpost. In Copenhagen, it is listed as one of the best pastry shops. I tried 3 tarts, it’s not bad. Balanced, clean. But not really a must-try.

Only Creamery
 36 Temple St, #01-02, Singapore 058581
12pm – 11pm
facebook / instagram

[Closing 28 May] Supporting Singapore’s pornstar’s ice creamery. The waffles is good, crispy outside, soft inside. But the ice cream was mid, too sticky, without much flavour. They serve vietnamese coffee.

Social Smoker
2 Jalan Leban, Singapore 577547
Tel: +65 8388 8396
12pm – 2.30pm, 5pm – 10pm (closed Mon & Tue)

The American BBQ restaurant is opened by three friends, all of whom know how to cook. One learned the smoking in San Franciso, and the other two have experiences in Michelin-starred kitchens like Zen. The restaurant serves beef brisket, ribs, etc. Food is okay but a bit overpriced. (2 pax for almost $100.) I do like how it feels like a neighbourhood vibe.

Surrey Hills Grocer
Raffles City Mall, 252 North Bridge Road, #03-42, Singapore, 179103
t: +65 83321024
facebook / Instagram
(other outlets: Ion Orchard, Holland Village, Woodleigh)

Been to the Jurong outlet (the original) twice and liked it. It served mostly brunch food there. But now that it expanded, so has the menu. The menu is just simple Western food. But they use really high quality ingredients. It tasted very clean and I felt good eating it. However, it’s pretty pricy. About $60 per pax.
