My uncle went to Batam, the Sex Capital of Singapore, and came back with two sons. Since Mao Mao the Virgin and I, the Sex-Addict, had never been there, this is a must-visit for us. Will Mao Mao lose his virginity on Batam? Read on. (I said, “Woah, very sad if you lose your virginity here leh.”)

Before we went, I did some research on the shopping malls and we went to Nagoya Hill Shopping Center, supposedly to be the best shopping center on Batam. (Take a cab there, but negotiate the cabfare by half.) The shopping was worse than your neighbourhood shopping center, Punggol Plaza or Ginza or whatever. But…

Me: O. M. G! A&W!!! Must eat!

MM: Why you xin-jia-poreans likey A&W?

Me: Because it reminds us of our childhood. The chain used to be in Singapore but closed all of them in the 90s. Very nostalgic. Sadness overcometh me and overflows the river. Only tears accompany me at night. Anyway, how awesome!!! Chicken fillet wrapped in waffles!!!

Later…

Sadness overcometh me and blah blah blah. But at least the servers were very polite. I have never seen fastfood workers in Singapore smile that way. (Later, I realized all Batam-ians are very polite and they keep smiling.) The Chicken waffle sandwich didn’t taste half as sad as it looked. Chicken as dry as the prostitutes on the island, but the burger was sweet from the waffle.

Actually, what was depressing was the rootbeer float. I remember it tasting a lot better, gassier with more kick. I suspect it’s drinking from a paper cup. Always insist on the glass mug. Other older branches on Batam have it but not here. Modernization sucks your life out like a whore on Batam. No wonder A&W died in Singapore.

My advice: don’t eat at any A&W, just drink rootbeer float for the nostalgic 90s. There are better things to munch and I don’t mean carpet.

  1. I am nostalgic for A&W too…but thanks for the warning. Think I’ll stick with making my own rootbeer float :)

    1. ha, but rootbeer float in a glass cup tastes awesome. Was in Malacca lately and tried that. :)
