Condoms and Cabbages
A very famous restaurant that is very near to our hotel, Four Points by Sheraton (SUPERB HOTEL!!!). It’s very strange because it is so huge, a 2-storey bungalow. The first floor had a performance and a gift shop and the second floor is the restaurant. Thai restaurants seem to be in bungalows. There are statues made of condoms, smelling very badly of rubber.
The restaurant itself has a shelter and it has those irritating fans that blow mist out. I hate those, you don’t know if the water, which lands on the food, is dirty. It rained and they off the fans but the rain kept splattering in! I was a few tables in and still I felt the rain.
When we first walked in, I thought, “Tourist trap.” All tourists around, not one table of locals. But the food turned out to be rather good. Among the dishes we ordered to share were tom yum gung, cabbages and condoms (a spicy salad using glass noodles to mimic the texture of condoms) and green curry. All the dishes were good and satisfying but not particularly memorable. I’m glad I came here once but won’t come again. We spent 4400 baht for 8 people.
Kinnaree Gourmet Thai, Bangkok
Another long walk along the colonnade but this time, the restaurant is furnished classily. Even the plates were shape of lotus leaves. Very romantic place. There were some locals, so you know the food is good. Every dish was exquisite and innovative. It’s contemporary thai food, instead of traditional one. I’ve never eaten thai food like this before.
Recommended by our very good hotel, you know this won’t be cheap. It’s called “Gourmet Thai.” But we ate much and paid 5500 baht for 8 people. Value for money. Highly recommended.

Sorntong Restaurant, Bangkok
A Chinese-Thai seafood restaurant that has two storeys, kinda like an 80s Chinese restaurant in Singapore. Many people recommended this place but it was average. Singapore cze char is better. I started the trend of ordering unknown things so when it comes, it is a surprise. A friend copied me and ordered for dessert the fried gingko nuts. I joked with her, saying, “Oh, maybe it’s orh-ni (yam paste) but the main is gingko nuts and the orh-ni comes as a dip.” But no. Don’t order it. It’s just fried gingko nuts.

Q Bar
Recommended by our hotel. Surprisingly Q bar is NOT a gay bar; it’s a straight bar. We walked there and a bouncer stopped us, “No shorts allowed.” So we wanted to go to another bar, took a few steps away, hesitated for directions, then I retraced and asked the door bitch how to get to the other bar. On hearing my perfect American-accent English, she asked, “Oh where are you from?” I should be said Vietnam. But honesty is my flaw. And suddenly, our skin became White. We were given the White-People treatment. Our berms grew into pants and we were allowed entry. I say all these sarcastically but in fact, she was very friendly and cheerful and our interaction was great (I usually feel awkward with strangers). She even told us, “Q Bar won the Best Bar of Bangkok.”
We went up to the bar, on the second floor: al fresco area and air-con, and we were hot, so we sat in. It was a great and quiet night because L had distanced himself from me these years and I really like him as a friend and that night, he opened up again.
Suddenly, we noticed that the acid jazz music isn’t from a CD, it was live! There was a saxophonist and a DJ with his console. Very cool.
I ordered whiskey because 14K has trained me well. He has a deep influence on me.

Section 20, Chatuchak
Hookerlily set the alarm clock wrongly, and it was partially my fault because I should have checked too. She called everyone to apologize and the group left without us to Chatuchak but in fact, Hookerlily and I were only 30 minutes late.
Although Hookerlily’s always late–she needs to kick the bad habit, which Mr NGFL is picking up–rooming with her has made me see that she tries to be on time. It’s really not her fault that her hair is limp or her powder refuses to stay on so she has to take more time. I mean, not everyone is as perfect as me, just jump out of bed, brush my teeth and ready, get set, go already with the eyeshit in my doe eyes. This is not making an excuse for her, but we were on a holiday. We didn’t need to follow a schedule; we should relac relac lah.
So we leisurely took a train to Chatukchak and we kept binging! We stumbled onto this chicken rice stall at Section 20. A woman sitting behind me, presumably working in Bangkok, said, “This is the best chicken rice stall in Bangkok!”
We ordered the normal chicken and the deep-fried one with innards. WOW WOW WOW. Probably the second best thing I ate in Bangkok for this trip. This is no hainanese chicken. The chicken was so unique! It was just bursting with spices. Even the deep-fried one.
And the best part: 70 baht for 2 persons.
I am glad we were late, so we could enjoy quiet time together and stumbled upon such great food.
