Michelangelo’s, Holland Village

The food was actually excellent but the poor management spoilt the experience of eating. Let’s talk about the food first:

Beef carpaccio $22. This is one dish I would NEVER order because raw beef is raw beef, it isn’t a test of the chef’s skills. But my date wanted it and since, like all men, I’d do anything to get some ass, I bit my tongue. The dish was actually very delightful. The bitterness of the rocket went very well with the smelly cheese but the beef was a bit wet, which gave an icky texture. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised that such a plain  and usual dish could achieve a certain standard here.

Both of us ordered the same main, pasta seafood ($32) – but how did they end up so different looking (see photos above)?! Answer: You can customize your pasta. He had white wine based linguine while I had squid-ink risotto. You can tell who the top and bottom is by the choice in food.

It has become a running joke that I order squid-ink pasta everywhere I go because they all suck and I want to keep trying to have a good one. I found it here. The flavors were very excellent: you can taste the ink of the squid quite distinctly but it doesn’t have a “dirty” smell or taste. The fragrance of the seafood had also imbued into the risotto, giving it a seafood-sweetness. There were also ample seafood, such as half a slipper lobster, mussels, prawns, scallops, and fish. All in all, there wasn’t a bad thing I could say about this dish.

Sticky pudding $13. Again, this was fantastic, piping hot, sweet enough but not sickeningly so. It was actually on par with or just slightly below the standards of the best sticky pudding I had in SIngapore at White Rabbit.

Unfortunately, the excellent food was marred by bad management. I called to make reservation for 7pm a few days before the date. Just one day before the date, the restaurant called me to say that they have only two slots: from 6pm to 8pm or 8pm to 10pm. I don’t understand how they could have neglected to tell me when I made the reservation. Ok fine, so I had to tell my date we had to bring forward to 6pm, such an early hour for dinner. When I arrived at 6, the restaurant wasn’t even prepared to take in customers. When they were, they gave me an al fresco table when I specifically asked for an in-door aircon table. They apologized and gave me a table inside, which was fine. Then I realized the restaurant wasn’t even packed. Why did they even need two different timings??? Later on, I observed that people were walking in at 7pm or 7.30pm. What nonsense is this? Why was I allocated slots when other people could just come at 7pm? It was befuddling. For a restaurant of this stature, it shouldn’t even have two time slots in the first place.

The service was good and the decor was classy, aiming for a upscale look.

We spent a total of $117 for two. (Well, I paid for it, need to get some ass, remember?) I liked everything about this restaurant except for the poor management. I will probably give it another go and see how.
