Lucky 13 is a Miami-styled bar-and-club that serves Cuban and Mexican-influenced food, opened by soldier-turned-Chef Garfield Angove, who has cooked for former Indonesian president Megawati and former First Lady of USA Laura Bush. Angove was formerly executive chef at Prive, one of our favorite atas restaurants. The bar is a place of suspect: bar stools and high tables are uncomfortable for a proper dinner but can you get good food?

For cocktails we ordered a decent mixed berries caiprioska ($18) and a grape fruit cinnamon old fashioned ($18) which Mr NGFL didn’t quite like because it tasted strange. I also ordered two cocktails of the month, one after another, at only $5 a glass! It was watered-down apple martini but it was so deliciously sweet. Hit me up, Snow White’s evil stepmother.

Food-wise, order the chicken wings (6 for $9), caramelized thickly with sweet and sticky BBQ sauce. Very shiok. The scallop ceviche with lemon and sea salt ($20) were very bouncy and fresh but the dressing was too light.

For the mains, the mahi fish tacos ($22) was only ok. Instead order the burgers. Try either the chef avocado burger ($22) with candied bacon and melted cheese in a homemade bun or even better, the Frank’s Miami Burger with chipotle onion relish and jack cheese ($22) with its very smokey beef patty. The burgers were hearty and the ingredients played off each other well.

Skip the desserts. The churros with chocolate ($15) was so-so and much too expensive for fried dough.

Surprisingly for a club-bar, the food was very enjoyable, ranging from average to excellent. But the service was a bit nonchalant. One waiter saw me signaling and smiled and continued chatting with another waiter before coming to me. The total bill ran up to $156 for 3 persons.
