Oldest surviving vegetarian restaurant since 1953, Zen Fut Sai Kai’s retro decor must have been retained through the years. But the incense smoke choked me for a few minutes until I got used to it. According to Hungry Angmo, the menu hasn’t changed since the first time he visited, “but the price has increased,” quipped Sg Food on Foot. The original price on the menu was struck out and a higher price listed.
But it was still very affordable, about $44 for 3 of us. (Thanks for the treat, Hungry Angmo.) And all the food was extremely tasty.
The must orders were fried wantons ($7 锦卤云吞), very flavorful mushroom in wonton skin in a sweet thick dip; and fried beancurd balls and kailan ($9 芥兰腐球, below). Dunno how they did it but it was umami with a feeling of bliss.
It was the first time I had sugarcane flower from sam kum sugarcane flower soup ($7 什锦疳花汤), which texture was like fish maw. The soup was refreshing and almost fruity.
This was an awesome meal and one of the best vegetarian food I ate before. Good value too. Support!
