Hooker Lily said she wanted to eat ah balling (pronounced as ah por-leng) and she said she wanted to eat the famous Chinatown one at Smith St.
This is actually a branch from the famous Golden Mile Food Center. It has several fillings: green bean, red bean, yam paste, peanut, sesame.
The reason why people eat ah balling is because it is very warming – people eat it during winter solstice. Sometimes on the 15th of the lunar month (Chinese superstition), there is a long queue for this stall.
We found it ok. Thin-skinned, chewy, viscous filling, with not-too-sweet peanut soup. The dessert hits all the right points but just hit the mark without exceeding it. Good but not perfect.
I think the famous one is actually in the Chinatown market itself but I dare not tell her.
