Walking on Sunshine, Orchard Central: Expensive but Terrific Garden Cafe

Walking on Sunshine cafe on the 3rd floor of Orchard Central is a baby breath of fresh air (although ironically the dried flowers hanging everywhere took their last breath some time ago). Everywhere you turn are huge green leaves or dried flowers.

It takes you away and makes you forget that you’re in the heart of the city. Just being in the environment makes you feel better, although the seats are small and the tables are cramped together.

They are actually a Korean hair salon-cum-cafe and you people-watch many stylish guys dressed in Korean fashion lounging around, walking in and out of the space.

There is a sign that says when you dine here, you can get free manicure services although we did not see any manicurist around and nobody offered to buff our nails.

Like the Korean salon, the menu offers Korean-inspired brunch food.

Kimchi crab pancake ($20.50)

One of the signatures at the cafe, kimchi crab pancake, is a mixture of kimchi, flour, egg baked into an oblong that looks like otah. Topped with a poached egg. Comes with a side of mesclun salad and avocado.

Can’t really taste the crab and not sure if the avocado goes with the main ingredient but the kimchi pancake is really tasty. It’s slightly burnt at the edges, giving it a nice hard crust when compared to the inside.

It’s slightly spicy, almost tasted like otah. The yolk of the egg softens the edge of the spiciness.

Souffle pancake ($20.50)

The Souffle pancake ($20.50), which takes about 20 minutes to bake, is another signature and it is awesome as a dessert. Not only is it pretty, it is delicious.

It’s the souffle kind, which means it’s almost like eating air, ethereal. The cream and honey provide a sweet, milky, and fat base–super delish.

The tart fruits (grapes, blueberries, strawberries) counterbalance any extraneous, if any, sweetness and supply the antioxidants to keep one’s youth!

A quick note on the excellent service. The two servers are sweet and attentive and there is no service charge, although there is GST.

It’s too bad that we went at 5pm, not really hungry and could only eat two dishes. We thought we would order more dishes but by the time we finished, we were full. We also didn’t try the coffee since it was late in the afternoon.

Although the food is priced relatively expensive, the food is ample. Besides, the food, service, and decor are fantastic. Definitely will return for more.

We paid for the food reviewed anonymously.
