I went to Shrove Tuesday on the 2nd day of its operations, hoping to have a break from usual hawker food on a Friday, but there was no hot food available yet, only ice cream, waffles and drinks. Bummer. Hot food will be available once the place is officially opened.

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday or Fat Tueday, is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It is a simple cafe, with nothing much to speak of about the décor. We ordered waffles ($5), with a scoop of Sea Salt Caramel ice cream ($3.80). A bit pricey as Creamier‘s waffle & ice cream in Toa Payoh is only about $7.50.

The light golden waffle was airy, and a bit crispy. It reminded me of Hatter Street Café’s Whoaffle, but Shrove’s waffle is full size, and it’s $0.10 cheaper. I wasn’t exactly blown away by the waffles, probably because I had something similar previously. The owner of Shrove told us that it takes them 3 hours to make the batter! The ice cream was OK only, texture was too smooth, scoop was smaller than other ice cream parlours. I prefer the ice cream from Creamier and Salted Caramel.

Shrove’s owner also recommended us tea beverages, as the tea leaves are handpicked! We had a sniff at the Melon & Mangosteen tea, and it smelled really good. I would have ordered tea if I had had my caffeine fix in the morning, but I was totally crashing and needed coffee. We were told that the beans are award winning beans from Italy, and it took the owner 6 months to find them. I had café latte ($4.50) which was really aromatic and smooth. It didn’t leave a strong aftertaste, which was good.
I will come back for the coffee since they have the most decent coffee in Toa Payoh. I spent about $13.
