Ginza Lion, Robertson Quay: My Secret Hangout, My Favorite Restaurant-and-Bar

It comes a time in a food blogger’s life that s/he wants to keep their favorite place a secret and not write about it. This is mine, but I have decided not to be selfish. Under the Sapporo Lion group, it first opened a beer hall in Ginza district in Tokyo in 1899. The group also owns the ever-popular Tonkichi, Domani, and Rive Gauche Patisserie.

The chef and manager are both Japanese but this restaurant serves western food. Clientele consists mostly Japanese. Huccalily, who knows that I don’t return to a restaurant, was flabbergasted to learn I have been back at least six times. Here are the reasons:

So much Black Angus roast beef for only $28!! The beef, their specialty, was fantastic, crispy at the edges and tender within.

There is something about the ambience. The decor reminds me of a Japanese jazz bar and the service was first class, making me feel at home. Always very attentive. For instance, once a customer was smoking along the pavement, the manager brought the drink out to her, instead of leaving it at her table. Kudos to the Japanese manager.

The strength of the food is that it’s reasonably priced and comes in humongous portions. The fish and chips ($10/$18) for example had FIVE pieces of fish on a bed of fries.

I’ve also tried seafood aglio olio ($12), chicken basket ($15, above), black Angus roast beef (200g $28), margherita pizza ($22), and myriad fingerfood and desserts. They may be standard pub grub, but they were all comforting and flawlessly executed. You can’t find fault with them.

So unassuming, unpretentious, comfortable and yet so classy. Only the Japanese can do it. Including alcoholic drinks, I usually spend $30-$45 a person. Stalkers, now you know where to find me on weekends. If you’re keeping track, this is the 4th restaurant to receive a 4/5 from me this year. Highly recommended.

  1. Well, Mr. Ho, you let the cat out of the bag, and I am grateful. Now Ginza Lion is also a favourite of mine. There is nothing to compare with that roast beef, done in a way only a Japanese chef would do. Also really enjoyed the pork belly rillettes, strong smoky flavour and creamy texture with small lumps of meat. Exceptional.

I spilled some water on myself (silly boy) and was treated to that legendary service… The boss immediately offered a towel and a seat at another table. So attentive and friendly.
