Murphy’s is both a bar and a lovely cafe (a bafe?), originated from UK, with lots of Queen Elizabeth’s memorabilia hanging on the wall. The UK outlet was voted “Best Chippy Chips” in Herfordshire, UK in 2014, out of 840 shops by more than 60, 000 people.
Besides their famous fish & chips, they serve burgers, pasta, and brunch food. Desserts: cakes from suppliers. Drinks: Beer, cider, coffee, root beer.
Skip this: I asked for recommendation, and the owner (?) said the chicken chop ($16, change to truffle fries +$1) was popular. NO FREAKING WAY. At the top of my head, I can name 3 hawker stalls in AMK that serve much better marinated chicken chops at 25% of the price here. And I don’t even live in AMK. I want a refund of my money and my calories, please.
OK: Seafood marinara pasta ($17). Ok, normal. Prawns were “fishy,” pasta past al-dente, but I like soft pasta, so it was fine.
OK: Bacon on toast ($9) was very tasty; rich with parmesan, and appetizing with sour dough–but $9 for one small piece? Make it three pieces lah.
Must Order: They use Canadian arrow fish for their fish and chips ($16, additional $1 for non-oily batter). The meat was thick and sweet, and even when we went for the normal batter, not the non-oily batter–what does “non-oily batter” even mean?–the crust was light, not oily, and crispy. Quite a fantastic and quality fish and chips. I can see why it won best in Herfordshire, UK.
We spent $60 for 3 persons. Although I think the food is over-priced especially the chicken chop and bacon on toast, I like the fish and chips obsessively, and will travel back to eat it. After eating it that night, I craved for it for days after. My advice: just go for the fish & chips, and ignore everything else on the menu.
