W Hotel Singapore Staycation: When Does the Quirky Become Kitschy?

W singapore review
W at night

Have been wanting to staycay at W since its opening. Blink of an eye, 10 years pass. It was pretty expensive; the cheapest entry level room (called “Wonderful”) went for about $400 when we booked, and it was a weekday. But the usual price was over $500.

For a fancy and not-new hotel, they seemed to have some problems internally. I emailed, asking for an upgrade because it was my partner’s birthday. They agreed but when we were there, the receptionist was blur and didn’t know about it until she checked the details. She said all the rooms were full, fair enough, but she went on to say to my partner, “Oh it’s your birthday! We usually decorate the room and put a birthday cake in your room but we forgot to do it. I’ll request for one now.”

Why would she ruin the surprise?! I mean, if they forgot to surprise my partner, then send the cake up as a surprise later. I didn’t inform my partner that I told the hotel about his birthday because I wanted it as a surprise! Haha. Really, experience matters in service line.

Wonderful Room

At the threshold of the room, toilet to the left and cupboard to the right

The moment we entered the room, we laughed! I could see how the design could be quirky 10 years ago, but 10 years later, now, the room looks like a brothel. There is red light coming from under the bed! The bed headboard has a design of hibiscus, that’s a tramp stamp tatt if I ever saw one. HAHA. Is that quirky or sleazy? My partner thought the room looks cheap.

I honestly think fancy hotels shouldn’t be so stingy. They should give free drinks, which cost a few cents when they order in bulk. Some hotels do give drinks for free.
Light the Night, am I right?

Pros:
-the room is big
-can throw a “Light the Night” theme party here, com’on ya mama-san and courtesans
-bed is super comfortable

Cons:
-noise: we actually heard people playing cricket on the patch of grass
-no charging ports usb beside the bed?!!? Is this 2018?!

FACILITIES

Swimming pool

One of the biggest hotel pools in Singapore

The swimming pool is the biggest draw for families, so there were many kids. There’s also a slide. Fun! There are also some jacuzzi functions by the side of the pool. You can rent or buy those bigass unicorn floats here – but why doesn’t the hotel just provide?

Gym

The gym is huge!

W’s gym is one of the best equipped hotel gyms in Singapore.

Quayside

Not really W’s facilities. But it’s nice to dine at Quayside and take a postprandial stroll.

Breakfast

Their hotel breakfast is held at The Kitchen Table.
Avo toast
Bread basket – we didn’t ask for one but every table gets one. it’s a tactic so that customers have something to munch on while waiting, making the waiting time seem shorter.
Dim sum
French toast
pancakes

Seeing that it was my partner’s birthday, they gave us complimentary breakfast. Lots of carbby items for breakfast buffet, not enough proteins. But the food was delicious.

Conclusion:

For a video review if you’re lazy to read: IG Reel or Tiktok.

Pros:
-they provide shuttle bus service
-room is big, bed is comfy
-hotel breakfast is great
-pool is awesome, so is the gym

Cons:
-far away from everywhere (no choice of entertainment, food at quayside or force at Skirt at W hotel). This could be a pro too but I’m thinking when you go somewhere far, you want some peace, but the pool was cacophonous.
-design needs some updating

  1. Design elements are always a hard sell, either love it or hate it. They are also difficult to update without renovations or disruption to guest / business. That being said, quirkiness aside, W does have decent, if not great fixture & fittings that one would expect of a luxury hotel. That’s why in most gateway cities, one can choose between a W or a Westin.
