I only recommend things I use personally. In 2015, I saved $688 using the Entertainer App (proof in the photo on the right) and I know someone who saved $1.6K! The app helps us save money by giving 1-for-1 offers (usually main courses), as if 50% off the bill.
One of the best things I like about the app is that you only need to make ONE purchase, and can SHARE the app with your friends and family; the app works across multiple mobile devices. I suggest you buy one app for your friends and family for their Christmas present! Psst… you can secretly use your own present too. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
The app is useful if you’re a human being who eats. For brunch, there are 34 cafes. For dates, 16 fine-dining restaurants. For family-friendly, or casual gatherings, there are 38 restaurants. For takeaways (like coffee, or croissants, or yogurt, or salad), there are 35 options. For gatherings to unwind between friends, and colleagues afterwork, there are 85 bars, nightspots, and contemporary restaurants.
If you want to purchase the app, my discount code 2016RERG gives you $10 off.
Using the app, I visited one of the 85 chill-out places, My Little Spanish Place (54 Boat Quay, Singapore 049843; +65 6532 0665; M-F 12pm-2.30pm, M-Sat 5pm-12am, closed Sun; facebook).
The restaurant is guided by the philosophy “mi casa es su casa,” my home is your home. Helmed by chef-owner Maria Sevillano from Salamanca, Spain, MLSP serves homely Spanish dishes.
The Entertainer gives you 2 tapas for 2 tapas, or 1-for-1 mains.
For tapas, our favorite is coca de anchoas y pimientos ($16, above). It sounds deceptively simple—peppers, anchovies, Manchego cheese, arugula on flatbread, drizzled with aged balsamic–but it tastes wonderfully complex. The crispness of the toasted bread is accentuated, not compromised, by the dampness of toppings. The cheese and anchovies produce a layered pungency.
Octopus (100g $38)
For mains, the secreto iberico ($28, above) is the way to go. First grilled, then smoked with apple wood, it is not at all tender, but when you keep chewing, umami-rich juices flow out.
My Little Spanish Place’s selling point is the collection of jamon (ham). A selection of 5 types costs $75. But the 30-month aged Sierra Mayor (25g $16) is the unique one, that tastes like cheese!
Paella de la casa ($49/$88)
A pity our Best Restaurants in Singapore 2015 is already out or My Little Spanish Place would be on it. But it’s in running for the 2016 list. Reservations highly encouraged; it was full house on a Wed night.
Chocolate tart is amazing.
